Optional Roleplay Spell System

A "Roleplay Spell" is classified as a spell that has little to no presence within the Neverwinter Nights game mechanics, and is utilized between players or in a quest. Examples of a "Roleplay Spell" include: Undetectable Alignment, Detect Magic, Prestigitation, Scrying, etc.

The following system has been designed for players who wish to use spells like this. Spells may be selected from the PHB or d20SRD only, and not from any other books or sources. If you have no interest in using these roleplay spells, this system is optional and you don't have to worry about it.

Divine Spellcasters
As all Divine spellcasters have access to any spell on their respective spell lists, and do not select "known" spells, they have access to any spell they could cast under the following restrictions:

1. If your character is assumed to always have a certain Roleplay Spell memorized, you must select a "dummy spell" of the same level to cast in its place. For example: casting Resistance as a dummy spell for Mending. If you wish to have multiple castings of a roleplay spell memorized, you must have the corresponding number of dummy spells prepared.

2. You must send a forum PM to Miss Sashi including all Roleplay Spells your character has memorized, and their respective dummy spells. If you do not send us a list of your dummy spells and the spells they represent, you will not be treated as having the spells prepared. If you wish to use the spells in a plot without PMing the list, your character will need to depart to rest or pray. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Send the PM, or don't have roleplay spells.

Wizards
Because Wizards are not restricted to a maximum number of spells known, and can learn spells from scrolls and the spell books of other Wizards, it is to be assumed that-- provided the spell does not conflict with your chosen spell school - a Wizard character can prepare any "roleplay spell" using same guidelines as the divine casters.

Sorcerers and Bards
Because spontaneous spellcasters are restricted to a limited number of spells known, we have devised a system to allow them access to a limited number of Roleplay Spells. Using a point-buy system, the Sorcerer or Bard will select a number of roleplay spells known to them, under the following limitations:

1. You must cast a spell of the same spell level when you cast your roleplay spell, to use up that daily spellcasting. For Example: casting "Resistance" to represent the casting of "Mending".

2. You must send a forum PM to Miss Sashi including all Roleplay Spells your character knows. If you do not send us a list of your known Roleplay Spells, you will not be treated as knowing them. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Send the PM, or don't have roleplay spells.

3. You may only update your list of known Roleplay Spells immediately following a level up, and only once per level.

Spells That Also Exist In NeverwinterNights
Certain spells (Clairaudience/Clairvoyance, Legend Lore, etc) exist in NeverwinterNights serving different functions than their D&D counterparts. If you have selected any of these spells in NeverwinterNights, this entitles you to the ability to cast it as either the NeverwinterNights function, or the pen and paper function, to be specified at the time of castsing. You are still able to take these spells with your Roleplay Spell Points, but this grants you only to the pen and paper function, and not the alternate NeverwinterNights function.

The Point-Buy System

Each spell costs a number of points equal to their spell level, except 0th level spells which cost 0.25 points. As a Fourth level spell, considering your character to have Arcane Eye would cost four of your allotted points.

You will only gain new points for every class in sorcerer or bard, and not for every character level. A Sorcerer/Bard would tally their Sorcerer roleplay spells seperately from their Bard roleplay spells. You will gain three points for every four levels, or, using the following chart:

1 - .75
2 - 1.5
3 - 2.25
4 - 3
5 - 3.75
6 - 4.5
7 - 5.25
8 - 6
9 - 6.75
10 - 7.5
11 - 8.25
12 - 9
13 - 9.75
14 - 10.50
15 - 11.25
16 - 12
17 - 12.75
18 - 13.5
19 - 14.25
20 - 15
... To continue at the same rate (0.75/level) into epic levels.

Sorcerers and Bards with Spellcasting Prestige Classes

If your sorcerer or bard character has a prestige class that gains spell levels as it progresses, you will get 2x the roleplay spell points for each level of this class that increases your effective spellcaster level. This is to compensate characters of these class combinations for not getting spells ordinarily.

Example 1
If your character was 6 Bard/5 Gatecrasher, you would have a total of 6 roleplay spell points (as Gatecrashers gain a new spellcasting level every 3 levels) calculated as follows:
(Bard level 6 = 6 spellcasting levels) + 2(Gatecrasher level 5 = 1 spellcasting level)
= 4.5 points + 2(0.75 points)
= 6 points

Example 2
If your character was 6 Bard/2 Gatecrasher, you woul dhave a total of 4.5 roleplay spell points (as Gatecrashers gain a new spellcasting level every 3 levels) calculated as follows:
(Bard level 6 = 6 spellcasting levels) + 2(Gatecrasher level 2 = 0 spellcasting levels)
= 4.5 + 2(0)
= 4.5

Example 3
If your character was 7 sorcerer/2 Eldritch Knight, you would have a total of 8.25 roleplay spell points (as Eldrigth Kngihts gain a new spellcasting level every level) calculated as follows:
(Sorcerer level 7 = 7 spellcasting levels) + 2(Eldritch Knight 2 = 2 spellcasting levels)
= 5.25 + 2(1.5)
= 8.25
